Sifu Robert Lay
I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia. As a kid I grew up watching kung-fu movies which got me motivated to do some form of martial arts.
When I was thirteen I joined a karate school and over the years trained in various kung-fu styles finding none really suited me. Then I trained kickboxing for three years until work intervened. After that I was eager to learn and better myself and I began to look for another martial art style.
When I heard about Wing Chun from my brother I checked out several Wing Chun schools until I found Master Joe Sayah. From my first couple of lessons I knew this was what I wanted to learn. I was amazed by the speed and effectiveness of Wing Chun after experiencing it first hand.
While working in the warehouse industry I trained Wing Chun for three years. During that time I was one of a few private students Master Sayah trained for tournaments. I competed in three kickboxing tournaments, won two lost one, and won one MMA full contact fight. I knew then, that this was what I wanted to do as a profession. So I embarked on my new-found path of becoming an instructor.
I trained under Master Joe Sayah for twelve months in an intensive instructor course program. Simultaneously I worked as an assistant instructor in the kung-fu schools and helped others achieve their Wing Chun training goals.(or helped others improve their skill in Wing Chun)
Wing Chun is so diverse and its strategy, effectiveness, speed and power is advanced beyond any other martial art I’ve seen. I believe with determination and hard work anyone who is willing to learn can do it!’ Si-fu Robert Lay is fluent in Mandarin and English.
